Coastal Access: Pescadero, CA

A couple weeks back we had a visit from family and the chance to visit Pescadero, California – a quaint coastal town about 50 miles south of San Francisco.  After filling up on the obligatory artichoke soup at Duarte’s Tavern, we strolled the main drag and came across some lovely shops.  Tunes echoed from the band playing in the grassy picnic area and just across the way, there was an outdoor art installation, Capradero – A Lot of Fish-Goats.  Once we’d taken it all in, we drove a short distance and stopped at Pigeon Point Lighthouse where onlookers staring at the sea were kind enough to inform us that seconds earlier whales were spotted.  D-oh!  Before leaving the area, we found Butano State Park and entered another world filled with quiet, redwoods, ferns and streams.  Our excursion wouldn’t have been complete without a stop at Harley Farms where we met the goats and left with some local honey and goat milk soap. I’ll certainly be stopping back for another visit to this wonderful town.  Here’s some of what we saw…

Ready for RSD?

“What is RSD?” you ask.  No, I’m not referring to a disease.  Well, maybe it is an affliction of sorts… Having spent many hours in record stores and being married to a vinyl enthusiast (putting it lightly), I have come to know and love Record Store Day.  It all started in 2007 as a day to “celebrate the art of music” and this year it falls on April 16th.

In the SF Bay Area, our personal favorite record store has to be Amoeba Music – there’s one in Berkeley or San Francisco and if you want to drive a bit further south, there’s another in Hollywood.  So, what’s your favorite record store?  Better yet, what are your “Top 5” albums?  With all the great music out there, it’s way too hard narrow it down, so here are five I’m liking right now (in no particular order)…

  • The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
  • Adele – 19
  • The Beatles – White Album
  • The Allman Brothers Band – At Fillmore East (Live)
  • Radiohead – OK Computer

And, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite duets, Bonnie Raitt and Norah Jones performing Tennessee Waltz.

San Francisco Scenes: Fort Point

From Fort Point, one gets an amazing view of the Golden Gate Bridge and over to the right, the beautiful San Francisco skyline.  Fort Point seems to be a popular spot for surfers patiently waiting for the right wave.  Besides the views, Fort Point has a rich history, which you can learn about on the various tours offered.  Of course, Fort Point also served as the backdrop for a scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo.  Below are some photographs from our day spent on a “self-guided” tour.  We stayed longer than we’d planned and got an unexpected surprise – a beautiful pink sunset!  One question we didn’t have answered during our visit: “What are Hopper’s Hands?”  Thanks to Google, I think I found the answer.

Wine Country: Francis Ford Coppola – Geyserville, CA

A couple months back we visited Francis Ford Coppola’s winery in Geyserville, California.  This is a fun place to visit even for those who don’t get excited about wine tasting.  The scenery is beautiful, there’s movie memorabilia courtesy of Mr. Coppola and his daughter, Sofia – there’s even a swimming pool with cabines!  You read it right – a pool.  It wasn’t open for use at the time we stopped, but opened April 1st for weekend use.  On the way back home, we passed through Healdsburg and stopped for lunch at a favorite spot for everything yummy – Healdsburg Bar & Grill.  Here are some photographs from the day.  Enjoy!
